标题:Towards augmented reality manuals for industry 4.0: A methodology

简介:Augmented Reality (AR), is one of the most promising technology for technical manuals in the context of Industry 4.0. However, the implementation of AR documentation in industry is still challenging because specific standards and guidelines are missing. In this work, we propose a novel methodology for the conversion of existing "traditional" documentation, and for the authoring of new manuals in AR in compliance to Industry 4.0 principles. The methodology is based on the optimization of text usage with the ASD Simplified Technical English, the conversion of text instructions into 2D graphic symbols, and the structuring of the content through the combination of Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) and Information Mapping (IM). We tested the proposed approach with a case study of a maintenance manual of hydraulic breakers. We validated it with a user test collecting subjective feedbacks of 22 users. The results of this experiment confirm that the manual obtained using our methodology is clearer than other templates.

标题:A Novel Event Detection Method Using PMU Data With High Precision

简介:To take full advantage of the considerably high reporting rate of phasor measurement units (PMU) data, this paper develops a novel PMU-based event detection methodology. Considering the huge amount of streaming PMU data, a data compression algorithm, swinging door trending (SDT), is first used to compress the PMU data and generate multiple compression intervals. Then, dynamic programming is utilized to solve the optimization problem, which is recursively constituted by a score function. Based on predefined PMU event rules, dynamic programming merges adjacent compression intervals with the same slope direction. Finally, all the PMU event features are characterized. A conventional wavelet-based event detection method is compared with the developed dynamic programming based SDT (DPSDT) method. Numerical simulations on the real-time and synthetic PMU data show that the DPSDT method can accurately detect the start-time of an event and the event placement with relatively high precision. Also, the PMU event features, including the magnitude and duration of strokes, are characterized.

标题:Additive Manufacturing of Mould Inserts with Mirror-like Surfaces

简介:Selective laser melting (SLM) is often applied in the production of steel moulds with high wear resistance and conformal cooling channels for advanced thermal management. The surface finishing of such moulds is crucial, especially if it is intended for the moulding of plastic parts with aesthetic functionality. The surface quality of such metal 3D printed moulds is typically refined by means of subsequent material removal processes, but this is often hindered by residual porosity and inhomogeneity in the metal structure of the 3D-printed part. In this paper an indirect tooling process chain for production of mould inserts is proposed. The process chain aims at exploiting the good replication capability of electroformed nickel, to copy mirror-like substrates. The bulky part of the insert is produced by means of SLM that shows a considerably higher material deposition rate. The thermal input is controlled throughout the process chain to prevent deleterious grains growth in the nickel layer. The roughness of the nickel surface is measured after the selective etching of the substrate and compared with the substrate roughness before the nickel deposition, showing good replication of the master surface. The proposed process chain overcomes the problems related to the deposition of thick electroformed coatings by coupling electroforming with higher output additive processes such as SLM - that furthermore allows the introduction of cooling channels in close contact with the mould surface.

4D printing is based on additive manufacturing technology, with one big difference: it uses special materials and sophisticated designs to print objects that change shape with environmental conditions such as temperature acting as a trigger, said senior author Howon Lee, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Time is the fourth dimension that allows them to morph into a new shape.

简介:The aviation safety community has traditionally measured safety performance through the lens of undesirable events – the historic recording, investigating and trending of the failures in the system. While this approach gives great insight into what has happened and why, it is of questionable value in determining what, where and when the next incident will occur. With the advent of the Aerospace Performance Factor or APF, aviation is taking a giant step toward a decision management solution that answers these questions and paves the way toward a revolution in safety performance measurement. The APF methodology is designed to expand the view of what information contributes to the aviation safety picture. The APF paints a broad landscape of organizational effectiveness by fusing weighted data from sources not traditionally included in the safety discussion, and then presenting the information in a way that assists aviation leaders in making better riskedbased decisions. This paper will discuss the APF from its to the progress of the initial and ongoing APF operational implementation, to its potential as a riskforecasting tool for the aviation industry.

简介:We’ve reported before on 3D printing technology being used to make parts for satellites and other spacecraft, and this trend looks set to continue in the future, with Thales Alenia Space being one of the major companies leading the way.

The company, which is a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, first began taking advantage of 3D printing back in April 2015. Its TurkMenAlem MonacoSat satellite was launched with a 3D printed aluminum antenna support, and since then every satellite it sends into orbit has a similarly lightweight 3D printed antenna support, as well as 3D printed reflector fittings.

The Koreasat 5A and 7 telecommunication satellites, orbited in 2017, featured the largest 3D-printed spacecraft parts ever made in Europe at the time. Today, Thales Alenia Space is taking 3D printing into series production to make components for telecom satellites built on the company’s new all-electric Spacebus Neo platform.

简介:Low cycle fatigue life consumption analysis was carried out in this work. Fatigue cycles accumulation method suitable even if engine is not often shut down was applied together with the modified universal sloped method for estimating fatigue cycles to failure. Damage summation rule was applied to estimate the fatigue damage accumulated over a given period of engine operation. The concept of fatigue factor which indicates how well engine is operated was introduced to make engine life tracking feasible. The developed fatigue life tracking method was incorporated in PYTHIA, Cranfield University in-house software and applied to 8 months of engine operation. The results obtained are similar to those of real engine operation. At a set power level, fatigue life decreases with increase in ambient temperature with the magnitude of decrease greater at higher power levels. The fatigue life tracking methodology developed could serve as a useful tool to engine operators.

简介:In cold metal forming usually a die and a punch are required to form sheet metal in the desired shape. These two parts of the tool need to be produced of hardened materials in high precision. In this paper it is shown, that by using electrohydraulic forming the punch is replaced by a hydraulic punch and the die can be made easily out of softer materials that seem absolutely not suited at first sight. This allows for rapid and cheap manufacturing of sheet metal parts.
